Autumn is here, and with it comes my Pumpkin Patch Mini Sessions! This year, I’m partnering with Cobbs Farm for my eighth year. The working farm is is where the pumpkins are grown right on the vine, creating an authentic and charming backdrop. Whether it’s the vibrant colours of the pumpkins or the crisp autumn air, this setting is perfect for capturing beautiful family photographs.
To help you make the most of your session, here are some tips to prepare and ensure you have a fun and stress-free experience!
1. Dress for the Weather
Since the sessions are taking place on a working farm, expect uneven ground, puddles and mud, especially if it’s rained recently. When planning your outfits, keep these things in mind:
- Footware: Choose comfortable, waterproof shoes or boots for everyone, especially for little ones. While you might be tempted to go for cute shoes, keeping everyone warm and dry will help ensure happy smiles during your session.
- Outfits: Autumn outfits with layers work beautifully for pumpkin patch photoes. Think cozy knits, flannel shirts, warm jackets, and scarves. For a fun twist, your children can also wear their Halloween costumes! Just be sure the clothes are practical for moving around the farm and sitting in hay or on the ground.
- Layers: It can be chilly, so bring a jacket or sweater. Layers not only help with the weather but can add texture and visual interest to the photos.
2. Prepare for the Mud
It’s always a good idea to bring along some essentials for dealing with the mud. Pack a bag with the following:
- Towels or wipes for quick clean-ups.
- A change of clothes for after the session, especially for little ones.
- Plastic bags for muddy shoes or clothing once you’re done.
3. Location Tips: What to Expect at the Farm
The Pumpkin Patch Mini Sessions will take place in the heart of a real, working farm. You’ll be surrounded by natural pumpkins which grow on the vines. The vines are cut so they are easy to pick up. Here’s what to expect:
- Natural backdrops: The natural pumpkin vines and open fields make for beautiful and organic photos. No props needed – Mother Nature provides all the charm!
- Farm elements: As it’s a working farm, you will see haybales to climb on and you’ll be able to sit on the lovely blue vintage super Dexta tractor.
- Plenty of pumpkins: If you’re planning to pick out a pumpkin after your session, this is the perfect spot! All pumpkins are grown naturally on vines at the farm. Some varieties of pumpkins are brought in from other fields, but they are all grown at Cobbs Farm. Pumpkins are £1-£15 each.
- Parking: There is plenty of free parking, this will either be on the hard standing in the farm yard or in the adjoining field.
- Toilets: There are portaloos available should you need to use the facilities when at the farm.
4. How to Make the Most of Your Session
Here are a few tips to ensure your 20-minute session goes smoothly and you get the most out of your time:
- Arrive early: Give yourself at least 10-15 minutes before your session to get settled, check outfits, and make sure everyone is ready. This also allows time for a quick toilet stop or snack before we begin.
- Keep children engaged: Keep the mood light and fun! Encourage your children to explore the pumpkins, look for bugs, or simply enjoy the autumn scenery. Natural interactions often create the most heartwarming photos.
- Trust the process: As your photographer, I’ll guide you through poses and help create beautiful candid moments. Don’t worry if your child isn’t looking directly at the camera all the time – sometimes the best shots come when they’re just being themselves!
5. Plan for Snacks or Lunch After the Shoot
Refreshments including cake, tray bakes, sausage rolls, hot chocolate and coffee are available on the farm from Goldhanger baker Natasha Williamson, who runs Tasha’s Tasty Treats
